Gartner's Survey: Personal PC Portable Increasingly Used in Work

According to a survey by analyst firm Gartner, companies are increasingly likely to use laptops belonging to their employees in the workplace. Over the past two years, 9 companies out of 10 have addressed the issue of aircraft belonging to employees. It turns out that 48% of them have simply banned their use while 43% of them have specific policies allowing their use.

To date, over 40% of respondents in the United States, Germany and United Kingdom have therefore a policy of using the laptop of an employee in connection with his work.

Annette Jump, research director at Gartner, says that using a laptop belonging to an employee as part of his work varies greatly from one company to another and from one country to another.

Service companies like insurance or telecommunications are more likely to allow their employees to use their own mobile computer at work that firms producing or wholesaling. And German firms are 60% to authorize the use of a personal laptop at work against only 30% in the United States or the United Kingdom.

In all cases in the 3 countries mentioned, the proportion of employees using their own mobile PCs as part of their work should grow by 10% in 2009 and 14% in 2010, there were still gaps and expected growth in 2010 40% in Germany and 15% in the United Kingdom.

This is a logical progression knowing that with the economic crisis, a growing number of companies seeking to reduce all possible costs.

But contrary to what one might think, this is not necessarily the companies that push employees to use their personal computers. Indeed by Meike Escherich, an analyst at Gartner, more and more employees request to use their personal mobile PC for their work. Indeed, a growing number of companies will develop specific programs that define the permitted uses, the required technical specifications and requirements for support and maintenance.

It is clear that this trend is good for corporate finance because it reduces from 9% to 40% the costs relative to the templates provided directly by the companies.

But Gartner, do not underestimate the costs of installing Virtual Machine on the PCs of employees who return and sometimes more expensive than a computer provided by the company, the latter winning but on the terms of productivity and personal satisfaction of the employee.

Gartner advises therefore marks targeting companies offer laptops that can satisfy both a professional and personal use as well as special package deals including virtualization software.
